What is the Foto Riesel Foto Rally? The Foto Riesel Foto Rally is a one-day photography event in which participants are encouraged to explore their creativity and photographic skill whilst completing a series of photographic challenges which are unknown to them until the event commences.
The event takes place in inner Sydney along a route that will be revealed on the day.
Following the event, participants will be invited to submit their images to a dedicated gallery-type website where representatives of Foto Riesel, The Australian Centre for Photography and a guest photographer will judge the submitted images against pre-determined criteria and award prizes across a number of categories.
Who may take part? Anyone with an interest in photography is invited to take part in the Foto Rally. This includes all calibre of photographers, students, enthusiasts, hobbyists, and amateurs of all ages and skill levels. Families and groups are also encouraged to enter. You do not have to be a photographer to take part, you simply need to enjoy the art of taking photographs.
Where will the foto rally take place? The Foto Rally will begin at Foto Riesel’s Create Centre, 360 Kent St Sydney on Saturday 16th October 2010. Your start time will depend on the time period you select when registering online, these are between 9am – 12pm.
The rally will follow a route through inner Sydney, to be revealed on the day of the event.
I am under 18, can I enter? Yes, provided you have your parents or guardians permission to compete in the rally and upload photographs for judging. Your parent or guardian will also need to be available to accept your prize, should you win.
I am a professional photographer, can I enter? Yes. The foto rally is open to everyone, no matter his or her photographic experience or skill level.
Can I win prizes? Yes. Prizes will be on offer across a number of categories, tbc.
Why is there an entry fee? The entry fee of $10 exists to offset some of the costs incurred in administering the rally, and contributes to the prize pool. At the end of the rally, participants will be provided with a $10 voucher to be used at Foto Riesel until the End of October, to offset this cost.
Do I have to use a Canon Camera? No. You can use any make, model or type of camera you wish.
Do I have to use a digital camera? No. We encourage participants to explore digital and traditional or analogue technologies during the rally. We especially encourage the use of alternative equipment, including Holga and Lomo cameras, Lens Baby or Polaroid.
Can I shoot film? Yes. You may shoot film, slides, digital, Polaroid, or any other media. Please note all analogue formats must be digitised for submissions to the online gallery. Any costs incurred in digitising images are at the participant’s expense. We will not accept prints or hard copy images for judging.
Am I under any obligation to purchase anything? No, none whatsoever. We simply want you to join in on the rally and have fun.
Do I have to relinquish my copyright to complete? No. Copyright in all images submitted to the Foto Rally online gallery will remain the property of the photographer.
Foto Riesel and the Australian Centre for Photography reserves the right to utilise winning images in promotion for upcoming Foto Rally events. In this instance the photographer will be notified and all images used will include an appropriate photographers credit.

REGISTRATION
When is the registration period? Registrations open Friday 27th August 2010 and close on Friday 15th October, 2010, 11.59pm AEST. All participants must register online in order to take part in the event.
Why are there registration times? To manage numbers on the day of the rally, registrations will be separated into start time blocks. You must select a start time block when registering. The time selected is the time you should be at the designated starting point to check-in and begin the rally.
Will I still be able to take part in the event if I do not register online and pay? No. You must register online and pay the $10 fee during the registration period in order to take part in the event.
Can I register instore at Foto Riesel or The ACP? Unfortunately, no. You must register online.
I tried to register online, but my selected start time is full. What do I do? Unfortunately we have reached capacity for this block. Please select another start time.

How many times can I enter? Each individual wishing to take part in the rally and enter images for judging must register prior to the event. A registration entitles participants to receive an event passport, map, instructions and challenge breakdown at the start of the rally, plus a gift bag at the end.
You need only register once to compete in the foto rally. A registration entitles participants to upload one image per applicable category (maximum 5) for judging.
I want to follow someone else on the rally, but not complete the photographic challenge or enter any images. Do I need to register? If you do not intend on entering images to the judging you do not need to register online.
This means you will not receive an event passport, map, instruction sheet or challenge breakdown at check-in or a gift bag at check-out. You will also not be able to upload images for online judging.
Registrations are not transferable.

to advise of the situation. Your registration will be removed from the start list. Registration fees are not refundable.

THE EVENT
What happens if I don’t make it to the finish line? You must complete the rally and reach the finish line in order to compete for prizes. At the finish line you will be given an access code which allows you to upload images to the online gallery. Without this unique code you will not be able to upload your images.
If the rally is taking too long, you are running out of time or are too tired to complete the route, you may shortcut to the end of the rally and make your way to the finish line to receive your code.
The route looks long. Do I have to follow it? The route of the rally is provided as a guide only. You may take any path you wish to reach the finish line. The route is provided to help you complete the photographic challenges, and it is highly recommended you follow it.
What is the photographic challenge? The photographic challenge is a surprise, and will be revealed on the day of the event.
The challenge is intended to be fun and enjoyable to complete. It does not involve a physical component, or require participants to take risks. It is simply a creative photographic challenge.

UPLOADING IMAGES TO THE ONLINE GALLERY
When can I upload my images? Images maybe uploaded to the online gallery during the upload period, commencing Sunday 17th October 2010 and ending on Sunday 31st October 2010 at 11.59pm AEST.
Can I submit a hard copy or print of my images? No. Digital files can only be submitted via our online gallery.
Will late entries be accepted? No. Online image submissions will not be possible after 11.59pm on Sunday 31st October 2010.
How do I upload a photo? Participants require a unique registration number in order to upload images to the online gallery. This unique number will be provided at the end of the rally, during the check-out process.

What resolution should my images be? Images should be submitted in JPG format, no larger than 1.5Mb.
Can I edit or change my image after submitting to the website? No. once an image is uploaded to the gallery it is final and cannot be changed.
May I upload portrait or landscape orientation photos? Photos in landscape or portrait orientation can be uploaded. The images needs to be saved in the correct orientation prior to upload, as you will not be able rotate images once they have been submitted to the gallery.
Will my entry be valid if I use image editing software? Yes, entries submitted after using photo editing software will be valid.

What are the judges looking for in the entries? The judging period commences on Monday 1st November 2010, and ends on Monday 15th November 2010, when the finalists will be announced online.
The judging panel will be looking for creative images that feature a unique interpretation of the photographic challenge. Prizes will be awarded based on artistic merit.
I am a finalist. Do I automatically win a prize? No. Finalists comprise the best three (3) images for each category, and one of these entries will be judged the winner and awarded the category prize.
When will the winners be announced? Winners will be announced at a presentation evening to take place at the Australian Centre for Photography, on a date tbc. Category winners will be notified by Foto Riesel by email prior to the presentation evening. The Grand Prize winner for Overall Best Image will not be revealed until the presentation evening.
